Surgent Studios Faces Uncertain Future Amid Funding Challenges and Team Restructuring
Oct-20-2024
Recent events surrounding Surgent Studios have sparked unease among gamers. Renowned for their debut release, the studio is confronting difficulties that necessitate a reassessment of their ongoing strategies and exploration of new prospects.
Surgent Studios announced today that the Zau development team has been placed on notice for redundancy as they attempt to secure funding for their upcoming project. The studio indicated that all work on the Surgent games division will be paused during this period. They expressed disappointment about the situation, emphasizing that the team has developed a prototype for a new project that promises to be more intense and engaging than their previous work.
Tales of Kenzera: Zau marks the studio's inaugural release, having been founded by actor Abubakar Salim in 2020. While the game garnered generally favorable reviews, including a score of 7/10 for its compelling narrative about coping with loss, it has not shielded the studio from difficulties in the industry.
Despite the positive reviews, Surgent Studios has encountered significant setbacks this year. Since the launch of Tales of Kenzera: Zau, the studio and its creators have experienced an escalation of harassment, prompting Salim to publicly address the situation. This has coincided with layoffs affecting over a dozen team members, reflecting broader trends of job losses in the gaming sector, where more than 13,000 people have been let go due to funding shortages.
As Surgent Studios looks ahead, they are exploring potential partnerships to support their vision. Despite the trials, the team is eager to move forward as they finalize their current project and strive to bring new ideas to life with the help of the gaming community.
