Maui the Shapeshifter: A New Metroidvania Adventure Inspired by Polynesian Mythology

A fresh Metroidvania title has emerged, offering a unique perspective on the genre reminiscent of Hollow Knight. This new adventure promises to engage fans as we eagerly await fresh releases.

Unveiled during the Future Games Show at Gamescom, Maui the Shapeshifter presents the Polynesian demigod in an exquisitely illustrated Metroidvania that channels the essence of Hollow Knight. The trailer introduces a malevolent being from another realm, known as Cemyk, as it disrupts the peace of a beautiful Polynesian island. In response, Maui steps in, leveraging his shape-shifting abilities and wielding a trusty fishhook to face this menace. This sets the stage for an intriguing narrative and hints at exciting gameplay ahead. Many are familiar with Maui's shape-shifting skills from Polynesian folklore or Disney's animated feature, Moana, and they play a central role here as well.

The remainder of the brief trailer showcases dynamic gameplay. By channeling the spirit of Aumakua, Maui can morph into various animals, enabling him to soar to new heights, navigate slopes, and traverse expansive spaces. Additionally, Maui's fishhook can be used to alter the landscape, solve intricate puzzles, and create fresh routes across the island. Upgrading this weapon enhances its strength, range, and other attributes, allowing for even more engaging gameplay.

The hand-drawn aesthetic of this Metroidvania immediately evokes the stylings of Hollow Knight, a sentiment that continues throughout the gameplay as players hop and slash with their hook – though its effectiveness compared to a traditional weapon remains to be determined. Much like other beloved Metroidvanias, new areas of the map unlock as players gain abilities and boost their hook's capabilities. Throughout the journey, you'll explore an array of environments, including jungles, volcanic terrains, mountains, and the famed Menehune village.

If this adventure piques your interest, Maui the Shapeshifter is currently available for wishlisting on Steam. Enjoy exploring!
